President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is asking the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to avoid any friction while going about their own tasks.
Jokowi made the remark on Friday after he summoned KPK chief Abraham Samad and police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti to the Bogor Palace.
The two were summoned following the arrest by the police of KPK Deputy Chairman Bambang Widjojanto earlier on Friday.
Many believed the police were seeking revenge on the KPK, which recently declared national police chief hopeful Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as a graft suspect, a move that eventually forced Jokowi to postpone Budi’s inauguration.
“[During the meeting] as the head of state, I have asked the police and the KPK institutions not to let friction occur [between the two] as they carry out their own tasks,” Jokowi told a press conference on Friday at the Bogor Palace.
Jokowi, however, did not reveal any more about his discussions with the two leaders, nor did he make any statement on whether he has stopped the case on Bambang.
“As the head of state, I have asked the police and KPK institutions to ensure the existing legal proceedings to be objective and in line with regulations,” Jokowi added.
