American apples are safe for consumption as the US apple recall applies only to one producer, the US Embassy in Jakarta has said.
The embassy said in a statement that Bidart Bros voluntarily recalled Granny Smith and Gala apples because environmental testing revealed contamination with Listeria monocytogenes at the firm’s apple-packing facility in California.
“The US provided this information to the Indonesian government shortly thereafter. At this time any illnesses associated with Bidart Bros products have only been linked to caramel apples,” said the embassy in a press release on Friday.
The embassy further explained the growing season for these types of apples had ended and the last shipment from Bidart Bros was on Dec.2, 2014.
“Apples from other growers in the US are not affected by this recall. We will continue to provide all necessary information to the Indonesian government in support of its efforts to protect public health,” it said.
